Notes From The Creator: Matt Burne
By: Brigitte Geiss, Associate Editor October 24, 2002
The Demon and the Executioner are waiting for you!
The Haunt On Sean Drive Creator, Matt Burne, Shares Insight On Abington Haunting
Matt Burne, owner of 107 Sean Drive, has been scaring Abington area residents with The Haunt On Sean Drive for four years. Each year the attractions grows with larger special effects and more ghastly ghouls. "My friends and I start preparing for the haunt during the summer." Says Mr. Burne, " When I was a kid, I visited a similar, smaller haunt run by a local dentist, and neighbor Dr. Richard Bush. After an inspiring trip to Salem, Massechusetts, I recalled how much I enjoyed that haunt as a child. I enjoyed it so much that I thought I would bring the idea back to the Abingtons. We like to sum it up this way...we do it one half for the kids, and the other half, for the kids in ourselves. " Obviously a task such as this requires numerous hours with the nose to the grindstone. Since the haunt takes place in Mr. Burne's yard and home, you would think that putting up with ghosts and goblins day in and day out would get tiresome. "I love it." states Burne, "I enjoy working on the haunt and my girlfriend is very cooperative." The haunt gets a fair amount of support from both the Scranton and Abington School Districts who all work hard to make the attraction fun and appropriate for all ages. According to Burne, "The Haunt is like a comical spoof of a 1950's monster movie." Burne and the staff of the haunt do everything they can to make the event enjoyable by even the smallest visitor. With everything that takes place, the attraction is more like a Halloween Festival. There is plenty to see and do for everyone and the month of October leading up to the big bang show gives onlookers the opportunity to see just how some of the special effects are created. "Diring the month, we spend all our time building the attraction." says Burne, "as people drive by to get a glimpse of the spaceship and such, many pop in and we show them how things are done. However, there are some effects that are kept secret." This year there are 35 crew members working on the attraction. Last year approximately 2,300 people came out on Halloween to see the spectacle and this year more are expected. "We can only get about 1,000 people through the haunted house," stresses Burne, "it's just not possible to get everyone through there but there are so many other things to do that noone leaves with a normal heartrate."
Putting together an attraction such as this could not possibly be cheap, still, the attraction is entirely free of charge. Even the goodies are included in the festivities, the only catch, enjoy yourself and create your own fond memories of Matt Burne's The Haunt On Sean Drive.
